Room

Born and raised in captivity, a young boy, under the care of his adoring mother, must risk his life in order to save the only family he knows in this moving adaptation of Emma Donahue’s best-selling novel.

A small room is the only world five-year-old Jack knows; his mother and the scary man who occasionally visits are the only people who exist. Ma does what she can to give Jack as much of a full life as she can while in captivity, creating a whole universe in their small space. When Ma concocts a dangerous plan for their escape, Jack’s life is put in jeopardy, forcing him to grow up faster than either of them ever expected. Winner of the People’s Choice Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Lenny Abrahamson’s Room is the odyssey of a devoted mother and her brave son refusing to live as victims. Up-and-coming powerhouse Brie Larson (Short Term 12, The Spectacular Now) displays her incredible range in a stirring performance as a mother who will go to any lengths to protect her son from the fears of the world. Newcomer Jacob Tremblay is a revelation as Jack, a five-year-old with enough emotional nuances to be a J.D. Salinger character. Rounded out by great supporting appearances from seasoned actors like William H. Macy and Joan Allen, this brilliant ensemble brings to life Donahue’s highly intelligent examination of childhood through the eyes of one who was raised in a turbulent and confined environment. Racking up overwhelming audience support wherever it travels, Room is a force to be reckoned with.
